WHAT IS A DECAL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

A decal consists of several layers of materials. A bottom layer of backing paper with its glue-like substance, an intermediate layer of printed colors and a top layer of lacquer coating (cover coat). The backing paper is porous so it will absorb water. This softens the glue and releases the printing (which is held intact by the top coating). This allows the design to be transferred from the paper on which it was printed to the surface being decorated.

 

WHERE CAN DECALS BE USED?

Ceramic decals are usually applied on fired glazed finishes. Most of these surfaces are white, ivory, or pastel colors. Most are not opaque enough to provide good results against dark backgrounds.

 

HOW TRUE ARE THE COLORS?

We make every effort to get the colors as close to the original as possible. But due to the nature of decals 100% duplication is usually not possible.

 

HOW DO I FIRE MY DECALS?

Soak decal in water to remove paper backing. Apply decal. Squeegee the ater out. Thoroughly let your piece dry. Fire to cone 017F .

CAN I PUT THE DECALS ON BISQUE WARE?

Yes. You should use "gum solution" on the bisque first. Apply at least 2 coats to seal the bisque. Let dry. Then apply one more coat and apply decal while gum solution is wet. Fire at 016 or 017.

CAN DECALS BE PUT ON GLASS?

Yes they can. Usually fire at cone 22. The color will be a matte finish and the colors will be lighter. We recommend doing test firing as the decals are ceramic decals.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO PRINT MY DECALS?

We print 3-4 days per week. So decals normally are shipped within 2-3 days.

MY FIRED PIECE HAS A SMALL CIRCLE MARK DEFECT AFTER FIRING. WHY?

This is from a blister in the decal. There was still water behind the decal. Be sure to completely squeegee all the water out of the decal and let your piece dry overnight before firing.

 

IS IT FOOD SAFE?

The toner does have lead. So we do not consider food safe.
